Amethyst varieties
Heated amethyst; heating over 300°C results in a fade in its natural, purple color, and transforms into a yellow-orange, yellow-brown, or dark brownish color. This variety is often incorrectly sold as citrine.

The name comes from the Greek word amethystos, which means “not intoxicated” or “not drunk”. The ancient Greeks made drinking vessels that were decorated with Amethyst, in order to prevent the intoxication with alcohol.
Until the 18th century, it was considered a very valuable and very rare gemstone, classified under the cardinal, or the most precious crystals, alongside diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald.
After the discovery of large deposits of Amethyst in many locations across the world, it has lost much of its value. The most valuable Amethysts in the modern day, depend on their color depth. The deeper the color, the more valuable it is.
